As Ella Fitzgerald once sang, it's "Summertiiiiime, and the livin' is easy."
Ahhhhh, the long, leisurely days of Summer. With Summer comes hang time in the sunshine, lounging at the pool or beach, BBQs, and tons of outdoor fun. One of my favorite parts about Summer is all of the delectable in-season fruit - blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, peaches, nectarines, plums, watermelon, melons, cherries, figs ... I cannot get enough (pardon me while I drool)! With temperatures on the rise, our desire for heavy, cooked foods lessens in favor of eating lighter, smaller meals.
How do I make the most of the Summertime fruit harvest? SMOOTHIES, green ones in particular! Ask any of my friends, and they'll tell you that they see me walking around with a Mason jar filled with a Green Smoothie practically every day. (I confess, it's true...)
Smoothies, how and why do I love thee? Let me count (just some of) the ways:
- They are easy peasy to make, and SAVE you money: Who doesn't love convenience, especially when you'd rather be spending your time at the beach. They are also a great way to use your produce, which means you aren't throwing food away later in the week.
- Increased Fruit/Vegetable consumption: I aim to consume 9 (yes, NINE) cups of fruits/vegetables (mostly veggies) a day. The American Cancer Society recommends at least 5 servings to prevent cancer and other chronic illnesses. Smoothies are a GREAT way to ensure you get your servings in! Smoothies are nutrient dense, and also ensure you get your daily intake of fat, fiber, and protein.
- They give your digestive tract a break: Smoothies are easily digestible, as your blender unlocks the nutrients and maximizes their delivery better than chewing any salad could (especially if you are the type to chew twice, then swallow...)
- Drink your vitamins and minerals: Smoothies are nutrient powerhouses that energize your body, improve your mood, boost your brain power, and support your weight loss or athletic goals. They are also a great source of antioxidants that protect against aging, inflammation, cancer, and neurological diseases.
I could go on forever...but I'll spare you (this time, ha!).
Instead, I'll share the smoothie love by offering you a FREE copy of my 'Sensational Smoothies' E-book.
